Certification and sourcing of your cotton

Certification and Sourcing of Our Cotton Fabric

Is our fabric certified organic?

While our raw cotton is not officially certified as organic, it is sourced from local farms in the north and upper center of Thailand with minimal chemical processing.

Certification challenges in Asia, especially for organic products, arise due to several factors. Major cities like Bangkok or Delhi are hubs for obtaining certification, which involves submitting titles, reports, and samples periodically. Additionally, hefty service fees and the need for constant advertising make the certification process commercially driven and costly.

Small farmers, often lacking education and knowledge, face difficulties navigating this complex process. Many we encountered struggled with literacy, making certification unattainable. At Hippie Trail, our commitment has always been to support genuine artisans and authentic individuals, prioritizing better living conditions for them while raising awareness.

Though cotton typically demands more water compared to alternatives like linen, hemp, or nettle, the lush tropical climate of Thailand, with abundant land and favorable weather conditions, mitigate environmental concerns. In these regions, cotton cultivation benefits from rain-fed and wild-grown practices.

The cotton we use in our orders consists of raw fabrics with minimal manipulation or treatment. These fabrics generally avoid the so-called 'wet process' prevalent in the fashion industry, aligning with our focus on sustainability and authenticity.

What is the Impact of Fast Fashion on Our World?

1. Affordability at a Cost:

Fast fashion clothes may be more budget-friendly, but as their prices drop, so does their quality. Rapidly evolving fashion trends come at a significant environmental and human rights cost.

2. Overconsumption Crisis:

The world currently consumes approximately 80 billion new clothing items annually, with some brands introducing a staggering 24 collections each year. This push for cheap and frequent production leads to substantial overproduction.

3. Disposable Fashion Culture:

The average garment is worn just seven times before being discarded. Shockingly, 85% of all textiles end up in landfills or oceans each year, contributing to a throwaway culture.

4. Environmental Carbon Footprint:

The fashion industry is accountable for 10% of global carbon emissions, surpassing the combined emissions from international flights and maritime shipping. The environmental toll is significant.

5. Water Pollution from Dyeing:

Textile dyeing ranks as the world's second-largest water polluter. Wastewater from this process is directly released into rivers, posing a risk of heavy metal exposure to both people and animals in nearby areas.

6. Petroleum-Based Fabric Dominance:

About 60% of global clothing materials consist of petroleum-based fibers like polyester, nylon, and acrylic. Unfortunately, these materials do not break down in the ocean, contributing to long-term environmental challenges.

7. Microfiber Pollution in Water:

Synthetic clothes, especially during washing, release around 700,000 microfibers into the water. These tiny plastic particles infiltrate marine life diets, accumulating throughout the food chain and posing a threat to ecosystems.

8. Exploitative Labor Practices:

Garment workers, predominantly women, face forced overtime and endure among the lowest wages globally. The harsh working conditions often force them to spend long hours away from their families.

By understanding the implications of fast fashion, we can make informed choices that prioritize sustainability, ethical practices, and a healthier planet. 🌍✨

What is Sustainable Fashion to Hippie Trail?

Understanding sustainable fashion can be different for everyone, as it involves various perspectives and aspects. It's a complex concept without a universally agreed-upon definition within the industry.

Our Definition of Sustainable Fashion:

At Hippie Trail, we see sustainable fashion as a commitment to respecting and safeguarding both people and the environment throughout the entire fashion supply chain — from designing and producing clothing to selling and using it. Our goal is to conserve and restore ecosystems while minimizing any negative impact on communities and nature.

The UCLA Sustainability Committee defines sustainability as "the integration of environmental health, social equity, and economic vitality to create thriving, healthy, diverse, and resilient communities for this generation and generations to come."

We align ourselves with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, specifically the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our dedication extends to implementing sustainable practices at every level of our production chain.

Key Sustainable Practices at Hippie Trail:

1. Material Choices:

   - We exclusively use plant-based fabrics and minimize the 'wet-process.'

   - Related SDGs: 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water), 15 (Life on Land).

   - We avoid fabrics linked to deforestation, such as viscose, by choosing local plant-based options.

2. Avoiding Synthetic Fabrics:

   - We reject synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon, and acrylic.

   - Reasons: Reducing fossil fuel dependence, preventing greenhouse gas emissions, and mitigating microfiber pollution in water systems.

3. Empowering Women in Slow Fashion:

   - We operate as a slow fashion brand, predominantly employing independent women tailors.

   - Contributing to SDGs: 1 (No Poverty), 5 (Gender Equality), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

   - Empowering women economically, providing fair working conditions, and minimizing the negative impacts of fast fashion.

4. Zero Waste Approach:

   - Mindful small-scale production with a focus on zero waste.

   - Supporting SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

   - Designing with timeless quality, utilizing fabric remnants for creating additional items like face masks and hair bands.

5. Eco-Friendly Packaging:

   - Packaging designed with nature in mind, using natural, handcrafted materials.

   - Aligning with SDGs 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and 13 (Climate Action).

   - Encouraging biodegradable or recyclable packaging.

6. Gender Equality and Diversity:

   - A commitment to reducing gender-based discrimination, exploitation, and violence.

   - Supporting SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and fostering an inclusive team with diverse backgrounds.

7. Promoting Self-Love and Comfort:

   - Encouraging self-love and comfort in one's own skin.

   - Contributing to SDG 10 (Reduce Inequalities).

   - Celebrating individual beauty and uniqueness.

At Hippie Trail, sustainable fashion is not just a concept but a way of life. We invite you to embrace our commitment to a fashion future that respects both people and the planet. 🌿✨
